MY PHILOSOPHY
Authentic Performance
I firmly believe that athletes are, above all, human beings, and their performance is intricately linked to their overall well-being and mental state. While traditional sport psychology often focuses solely on optimizing performance, using effective mental models, tools, and exercises, I recognize that true optimization requires addressing the deeply personal factors that can hinder performance or contribute to negative thoughts.
In the sports world, it's often said that success is "all in the head," implying that performance issues stem solely from lack of focus. However, I see performance as a complex interplay between the body, mind, and soul. Emotional barriers frequently impede an athlete's progress.
So, what exactly do I do when working with athletes? I take an integrated approach, combining elements of psychology and mental coaching. I delve into an athlete's goals, aspirations, and strategies for achieving them, while also evaluating their personality traits, strengths, and available resources. Together, we explore their reactions and coping mechanisms during training and competition, and devise strategies for handling stressors and pressure more effectively.
I help athletes understand the emotional triggers that may be undermining their performance, such as pushing too hard post-injury or letting a poor result affect their confidence. While resilience is admirable, relentless self-pressure can lead to increased stress, emotional strain, and ultimately burnout. By encouraging athletes to pause and examine the deeper determinants of their performance, we can cultivate a healthier approach to achieving their goals.
In sports, as in life, true synergy between body, mind, and soul can only be achieved through deep emotional understanding and acceptance.
